Morukuru Family Madikwe

Our ‘home away from home’ with Morukuru Family Madikwe.

This past week, we were treated to a first look of the newly refurbished Morukuru Family Owners and River House by Fox Browne Creative.

These family owned and run private villas, now have a refreshed and updated look with all the makings of a luxurious bush holiday and the feel of an exclusive, private family home in the magnificent, malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa.

Set amidst the enormous Morukuru trees along the Marico River, in a private concession of the Madikwe Private Game Reserve, these villas are exquisitely positioned to ensure a truly African experience that encourages relaxed mornings alongside the river, lazy afternoons around the pool and al fresco evenings around the fire.

From the moment that we arrived and checked into Morukuru River House, it was evident that our time was truly our own allowing us to tailor the experience.
The concept of exclusive use, from having our own game vehicle and dedicated staff on hand to carte blanche of our daily meals prepared by Chef Mathebula, allowed us to take charge of every aspect of our stay.

Their inspiration for this unique offering?

The growing need for guests to connect with their loved ones in a private exclusive environment, using some of the area’s signature features as motivation for creativity, namely the famous Painted Dogs of the area, Tswana basket weave and the dense riverine forest.

What stood out for me from the beginning, the strong use of colour (mustard accents and pattern features) and in the apt words of Debra Fox, Fox Browne Creative, “curated rather than decorated interiors.”

At Morukuru River House, the colour palette is inspired by the olive green of the ancient Morukuru trees and riverine forest and features throughout the house.

In the bedrooms the hand woven, headboards are inspired by the traditional basket weave of the Tswana culture in the region. Their use of geometric pattern in all their design is carried through in the bold texture on the stained-glass panels in the new cabinetry, complete with every amenity imaginable, ensuring an exquisite and comfortable stay with no luxury or expense spared.

The outdoor verandah has been enlarged with a new bigger pool to create spacious outdoor living for families, which we were encouraged to make the most of during the hot summer afternoons between game drives to cool down, and did.

Mealtimes with Morukuru Family, whether it be a Campfire Boma Experience, a meal in the privacy of your luxury villa or sitting alongside the Marico River enjoying the bird life are truly first class thanks to the dedicated in house kitchen team!
Think savoury couscous with grilled chicken breasts and curried creamy sauce, de-constructed salad with grilled salmon, boiled eggs and avocado, vanilla Panna Cotta with strawberry coulis, Chef Mathebula’s ‘potjie pot’ take on a full English breakfast cooked over open coals or his freshly baked, legendary Honey Cake made with Morukuru’s honey, which has been a firm favourite of their visitors dating back to 2005.

Coming in from a sunset game drive before dinner, we were greeted each evening by refreshing welcome drinks and crisp hand towels followed by the choice of an outdoor bubble bath (or shower) under the stars, one of many highlights for me from the trip, but what I loved most about Morukuru…

The people.

In summary, Morukuru Family Madikwe truly is an exquisite ‘home away from home’!
